Nakovacake Development Trust History
The Journey of Nakovacake: From Land Ownership to Holistic Development
The story of Nakovacake is a testament to resilience, foresight, and a deep commitment to community well-being. It begins with the registration of common ownership on October 16, 1896, marking the formal recognition of the Yavusa's ancestral ties to their land.
For generations, the elders of Nakovacake primarily engaged in traditional agricultural activities, with a strong emphasis on sugar cane farming. Their rich fishing grounds also served as a vital source of sustenance, embodying a self-sufficient and harmonious way of life.
A pivotal moment arrived in the 1947. Demonstrating remarkable vision and generosity, the community's elders convened and collectively agreed to cede a portion of their land, specifically Lot 39, for the establishment of what would become Nadi Town. This act laid the foundation for significant urban development in the region.
From the late 1940s through to the 1980s, the people of Nakovacake continued their efforts in sugar cane farming, which remained a cornerstone of their economic activity. During this period, they also began to invest in their community's infrastructure, constructing several concrete houses and even establishing a small supermarket, showcasing an early entrepreneurial spirit.
The 1980s marked a new era of proactive development with the initiation of the Nakovacake Housing Scheme. Leveraging lease money derived from their land, the community embarked on an ambitious project that successfully led to the construction of over 100 houses, significantly improving living conditions for their beneficiaries.
By 2006, the entire Yavusa e Tolu gathered and made a momentous decision: to reform their trust. This reform was driven by a vision to expand beyond mere housing initiatives and embrace a broader scope of engagement in both social and economic development for all beneficiaries. This pivotal decision led to the formal establishment of the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT) as it is known today.
In the 18 years since its establishment, Vanua Nakovacake, through the Nakovacake Development Trust, has proudly showcased its business development progress. The Trust is committed to sharing its journey and seeking partnerships, believing that growing together as one in this dynamic business world is the path to continued prosperity and community empowerment.
